Recently, Gerard van Buurt, a biologist living on Cura??ao, informed me about a new species for that island. It is Zachrysia provisoria (Pfeiffer, 1858), which originates from Cuba but has been introduced at several places in the West Indies and also Florida (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zachrysia_provisoria). Gerard found it additionally on Antigua and St. Maarten.
The species was first found in gardens in the Dominguito district of Willemstad and has already spread to nearby areas. It is a major horticultural pest. Some specimens were found with predation marks, possibly of mocking birds (Mimus gilvus) or troupials (Icterus icterus).
Within short, Gerard will publish this observation together with Ad Hovestadt in ‘Spirula’. Thanks Gerard for sharing.
